Strata

Strata by Dennis H. Miller is a three-part series of audiovisual works exploring color, form, and sound as shifting, layered terrains. Each piece combines smoothly transforming imagery with an original ambient score, creating an immersive experience that is both contemplative and engaging.

Across the series, bands and fields of vibrant hues - blues, reds, yellows, and oranges - flow into one another with steady, measured motion. The transformations unfold like a journey through abstract landscapes: sometimes bright and high in contrast, other times more subdued and blended, but always continuous and balanced. The mellow musical accompaniment underscores this sense of fluid inevitability, enhancing the works’ meditative quality without demanding focus.

While Strata I and II move through flowing layers of color that culminate in a spacious clearing of white, Strata III introduces multiscale Turing patterns — a system first proposed by Alan Turing to explain natural markings in biology. Adapted into a creative process, these patterns generate shifting organic abstractions around a stable central form, offering a visual meditation on balance amid change.

Together, the Strata works function as contemporary moving paintings: atmospheric, abstract, and deeply calming. Whether in private or public space, they bring a sense of rhythm, flow, and renewal — a passage through color and sound that invites viewers to pause, breathe, and reflect.
